Sustainable Coffee Sourcing at Dwyfor
Here at Dwyfor Coffee we have our own sustainable coffee sourcing program, which we have been developing for a few years now in Costa Rica, Brasil and India. This runs alongside our "Fairtrade" coffee purchasing. Here is an update.

Costa Rica Naranio West Valley
Dwyfor have been roasting coffee from the West Valley Cooperative Naranjo, for a few years now, and have been consistently impressed by their ability to produce top quality strictly hard bean (shb) coffees in years when the rest of the country's crop was not so good.

In 2002 and 2003, our roasters were invited to be part of an International jury of coffee tasters to judge fine quality arabicas from all over Costa Rica. While there we formalised the relationship with Naranjo to the extent that we are now proud to advertise this fact.

Naranjo is a co-operative and there are over 2000 farmer members. Each farmer brings his coffee to the co-operative to be pulped and milled. The benefits to the community are immense. By being a member, the farmer and family have access to their own supermarket, wholesale supply business and social club as well as on hand agricultural expertise. The farms are situated between 3000 and 5000 feet above sea level. Produced in volcanic soil the coffee beans are uniform and have a delightful sweetness. Most of the parchment is sun dried. The advantage to this is that the coffee taste develops naturally, in its own time and becomes more balanced and sweet in cup. We use Costa Rican arabicas in most of our filter and espresso coffees. However to truly appreciate them they can be drunk on their own.

Brasilian Speciality Coffee Association BSCA
Fazenda Fortaleza

All members of the BSCA have to fulfil strict Social, Environmental and Quality criteria, and are audited annually. Here at Dwyfor we have developed close working relationships with some of these farms, one of them being The Fazenda Fortaleza, where the coffee is so good, we named one of our espresso blends after it.

We have visited the farm and have seen first hand the fantastic work done by the Nogueira family. The farm offers free dental services and subsidised health plans for all the employees and their families. Children are enrolled in school and their illiteracy rate is zero Some families are already in their fourth generation as employees of the farm and have been trained to specialize in coffee production. "In our agricultural activities we are concerned with high quality, productivity, respect to the environment and social issues," states Alexandre Nogueira.

Karnataka, India - Faiz Musakutty
The Indian coffee market has only recently been released from the Government controls, so that farmers like Faiz can sell their coffee to anyone in the World. Faiz's family has two farms - Bibi Plantation in Sunticoppa, Coorg District and Nath Plantation on the edge of the Western Ghats. Both are in the province of Kamataka. His coffee is grown at 800-900m -both Arabica and Robusta, as well as pepper, rice.
